Yala National Park
Sri Lanka's most visited and most celebrated wildlife reserve, Yala is home to the highest density of wild leopards anywhere on Earth. Block I — the most accessible section — offers consistent leopard sightings that most East African safari destinations simply cannot match.
Minneriya National Park — The Gathering
Between June and September, Minneriya hosts one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth. Hundreds of wild Asian elephants — sometimes over 300 — congregate around the ancient Minneriya tank as the surrounding jungle dries out. It is known simply as "The Gathering."
Wilpattu National Park
Sri Lanka's largest national park and one of its least-crowded, Wilpattu is defined by its unique 'villus' — natural lakes formed in sandy basins. Dense scrub forest and remote tracks make wildlife encounters feel genuinely wild.
Udawalawe National Park
If elephants are your priority, Udawalawe is unrivalled. The park's open grassland habitat means elephant sightings are almost guaranteed on every game drive — herds of 30–50 individuals are common.
Kumana Bird Sanctuary
Adjacent to Yala's southern boundary, Kumana is Sri Lanka's premier birding destination — a vast mangrove swamp and lagoon system hosting tens of thousands of migratory waterbirds from April to July.
