Amangalla — The Fort Suite

Your Zelenso chauffeur-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport and drives you south on the Southern Expressway — two and a half hours to Galle Fort. Amangalla — the Aman Group’s Fort property — occupies the old Dutch Governor’s residence inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The evening is a private orientation walk through the fort’s 17th-century streets: the Groote Kerk, the lighthouse, and a gin and tonic on the ocean-facing ramparts as the Indian Ocean catches the last of the daylight.

The Fort in Depth

A full day in Galle Fort — the most complete colonial heritage town in Asia. The morning is a private three-hour walk with a local historian who has lived inside the fort for thirty years — covering the complete colonial stratigraphy, the VOC trade networks, and the Moorish traders whose families still live in the same houses their ancestors built. The afternoon is rest and exploration: boutique antique shops, gem dealers, and sunset on the ramparts.

The Reef and the Coast

The coastal road east from Galle passes through Unawatuna for a two-hour private snorkelling session: healthy coral heads, large sea turtles, and extraordinary reef fish diversity. The afternoon drive continues to Mirissa — a small beach town on a deep natural bay. Sunset at Parrot Rock — a small rocky outcrop from which the sunset view across Mirissa Bay is the most photographed image on the south coast.

The Blue Whale Migration

At 6.30am, your licensed whale watching boat departs from Mirissa harbour. Spinner dolphins escort the boat toward the Dondra Head channel. At the channel, the first blow: thirty metres of blue-grey body rolling in a long arc. The boat returns by 10am. The afternoon is Mirissa beach — surf, beach cafés, and freshly grilled seer fish. Evening: a private seafood dinner on the beach at sunset — the freshest fish from the morning catch, the Indian Ocean thirty metres away.

Amanwella — The Indian Ocean Infinity Villa

The stilt fishermen of Weligama balance on poles driven into the sea bed and fish with lines into the shallow reef — a centuries-old tradition. Your afternoon is a private surf lesson or guided stand-up paddleboard session. The evening is a private cooking class with a local family — Sri Lankan rice and curry from scratch: coconut milk preparation, tempering spices, and the pol sambol that elevates everything it accompanies.

The River and the Beach

The drive north follows the coastal highway through Hikkaduwa — Sri Lanka’s most accessible coral reef. Bentota is a river estuary town of extraordinary beauty. The afternoon is the Madu River mangrove boat safari — a silent electric boat threading through fifteen square kilometres of mangrove forest past cinnamon island, fish therapy pools, and nesting heron colonies. Evening: a farewell dinner on the river terrace as the Bentota River catches the reflection of the moon.

The Farewell

A final breakfast on the river terrace. The drive to Colombo takes ninety minutes along the expressway. A Zelenso farewell hamper — Ceylon tea, a bottle of arrack, a small piece of Galle Fort handcrafted lace — waits in the vehicle.
