Dunhinda Falls Rainforest Trail & Smoky Cascade

Dunhinda Falls, located 5 kilometres north of Badulla, is celebrated as one of Sri Lanka's most picturesque cascades. Formed by the Badulu Oya rushing through a narrow rocky gap, the 64-metre high plume crashes into a deep pool below, producing a perpetual blanket of smoky mist (from which it derives its Sinhala name 'Dunhinda').

Why is Dunhinda called the Smoky Waterfall?

The sheer force of the Badulu Oya being squeezed through a narrow rock cleft causes the water to atomize into millions of microscopic water droplets upon impact with the rocky basin below. This creates a permanent, dense column of swirling white spray resembling smoke billowing from a forest fire.

As sunlight strikes the misty vapor, vivid rainbows frequently arch across the gorge, creating an extraordinary spectacle against the backdrop of dark, wet granite cliffs and lush tropical foliage.

What is the walk to the waterfall like?

The 1.5-kilometre footpath winds along the gorge wall under a dense forest canopy. Along the way, local villagers sell refreshing king coconuts, herbal drinks (belimal and kothalahimbutu), and native wild fruits. A suspension bridge crosses the rushing river, and a viewing platform near the trail's end provides an unobstructed frontal vantage point of the cascade.

Troops of endemic toque macaques can frequently be observed frolicking in the trees above the trail.

Wear footwear with reliable grip: the earthen path can be muddy and slick, especially after morning rains.
Secure personal belongings and snacks, as local monkeys are inquisitive and adept at snatching food.
