Pigeon Island Marine National Park, located one kilometre off the coast of Nilaveli in Trincomalee, contains some of Sri Lanka's healthiest live coral reefs. The shallow, crystal-clear coastal waters allow snorkellers to glide over vibrant coral gardens and swim alongside gentle blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill sea turtles, and colorful schools of parrotfish.

What is the underwater experience at Pigeon Island?

Pigeon Island offers one of the most accessible coral reef snorkelling experiences in the Indian Ocean. Just metres from the island's white sand beach, the water gives way to thriving fields of branching staghorn corals and massive brain coral domes bathed in bright tropical sunlight.

The park's signature highlight is the resident population of juvenile and adult blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus). Completely harmless to humans, these sleek, graceful creatures cruise through the shallow reef flats, often passing within arm's reach of quiet snorkellers.

Why is seasonality critical for Pigeon Island?

The East Coast of Sri Lanka experiences its prime dry season between May and September. During these months, the sea is mirror-calm, water visibility reaches up to 20–25 metres, and ocean temperatures are pleasantly warm.

From November to March, the northeastern monsoon generates larger ocean swells and diminished visibility, making excursions less suitable.

Practical tips before you go

Visit in the early morning (around 08:30 AM) before mid-morning boats arrive, when the reef is most peaceful.
Wear reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen or a full-coverage rashguard to protect delicate coral polyps.
Do not stand on or touch the live corals; life jackets are available to help maintain effortless buoyancy.
Water shoes are recommended for walking on the coarse coral rubble beach of the island.
