Originally constructed in the 1930s by Helga's parents—eminent Sri Lankan politician Minnette de Silva's family—the estate was transformed into an artistic sanctuary following personal loss and creative reinvention. Helga turned the walls into an evolving canvas, painting mythical creatures, skeletons, dancing peacocks, and poignant life vignettes across every corridor.

The property inspired the Stereophonics' UK chart hit song 'Madame Helga' after frontman Kelly Jones stayed here during a tour of Sri Lanka.
