Why is this train journey so famous?
The line was built to carry tea down from the highlands, so it runs through the middle of the estates rather than around them. For hours the window is filled with terraced tea, pickers on the slopes, waterfalls, eucalyptus and long drops into misty valleys, and the train moves slowly enough to actually watch it.
The Nine Arches Bridge near Ella, a colonial-era stone viaduct in the middle of jungle and tea, has become the single most photographed structure in the country.
Which seats and which side should you book?
Heading from Kandy towards Ella, the right-hand side of the carriage has the better views for most of the route. The valley drops away on that side. Reserved first and second class seats can be booked around 30 days in advance and are usually gone within days in high season.
