Why is Mihintale of supreme spiritual significance?
According to ancient chronicles, King Devanampiya Tissa was hunting a stag on this wooded mountain when Arahat Mahinda—son of Indian Emperor Ashoka—called him by name. The ensuing conversation tested the king's wisdom before Mahinda preached the Buddhist teachings, leading to the royal adoption of Buddhism throughout the island.
The entire mountain was subsequently dedicated as a monastery. At its peak, Mihintale housed more than 3,000 Buddhist monks, supported by sophisticated royal hospitals, bathing ponds, and dining refectories.
What will you see as you climb Mihintale?
The ascent is divided into three grand terraces shaded by Temple Flower (Araliya) trees. Along the way, explore the ruins of an ancient Ayurvedic hospital with a stone medicinal trough (beheth oruva), Kantaka Cetiya featuring some of the oldest stone carvings in Sri Lanka, and an ancient refectory with massive stone food vessels.
At the upper plateau, intrepid walkers can climb the iron-railed staircase up Aradhana Gala (Meditation Rock) for an awe-inspiring 360-degree vista over ancient wewas and the endless canopy of the North Central dry zone.
Practical tips before you go

- Socks are advisable for walking comfortably across the sun-warmed stone flags of the upper terrace.
- Pair Mihintale with a morning or following-day tour of the Anuradhapura UNESCO Sacred City.
