What was Yapahuwa's historical role?
Following invasions from southern India that forced the abandonment of Polonnaruwa, King Bhuvenakabahu I relocated his royal capital and the Sacred Tooth Relic to the natural defensive stronghold of Yapahuwa in 1272.
The city was fortified with concentric ramparts, moats, and high stone walls. Its centerpiece was the royal palace and Temple of the Tooth constructed on high rock terraces, protected by sheer granite precipices on three sides.
Why is the Yapahuwa staircase celebrated worldwide?
The steep ornamental granite staircase is considered a masterpiece of late medieval Sinhalese stonemasonry. Intricate stone friezes depict dancers, musicians playing ancient drums, mythological gajasimha (elephant-lions), and pairs of proud sculpted granite lions guarding the entranceway.
The craftsmanship exhibits distinct foreign influences—including Cambodian and Chinese stylistic elements—reflecting the international trade networks of the thirteenth-century kingdom.
