Sri Lankan Village & Cooking Experience
A village cooking experience takes you into a rural Sri Lankan home to prepare rice and curry from scratch: scraping coconut, grinding spices on a stone, and cooking over a wood fire in clay pots. Most visits include a lakeside or paddy-field transfer by bullock cart or canoe, and finish with lunch together.

What happens during a village cooking experience?
The shape of the morning is consistent, though every host family runs it slightly differently. It is a working home rather than a demonstration kitchen, and you do the work.
- A village transfer: often a bullock cart along a track and a dug-out canoe across the tank
- A walk through home gardens and paddy to see what is being picked that day
- Scraping fresh coconut on a hiramanaya and grinding spices on a stone slab
- Cooking four to six curries in clay pots over a wood fire
- Eating together, by hand, in the shade: usually far more food than you expect
What will you actually cook and eat?
Rice and curry is not one dish but a table: a mound of rice ringed by small curries, each cooked separately. Expect dhal tempered with curry leaves and mustard seed, a jackfruit or breadfruit curry, a coconut-milk vegetable curry, a fiery pol sambol pounded with chilli and lime, a fried mallum of shredded greens, and papadam.
Most of it is naturally vegan, since coconut milk does the work that dairy does elsewhere. Meat or fish curries can be added, and heat levels are adjusted at the pot rather than assumed.
Is this a genuine village experience or a staged one?
Both exist in Sri Lanka, and the difference is visible within ten minutes. In a staged version you watch, photograph and leave; in a real one you sit on the kitchen floor, get told your coconut scraping is too slow, and eat with the family afterwards.
We work with a small number of host families who cook what they were going to cook anyway, and we keep group sizes small enough that you are in a kitchen rather than an audience.
Practical tips before you go
- Say how much chilli you actually want: Sri Lankan 'mild' is still warm.
- Wear clothes you do not mind smelling of woodsmoke.
- Come hungry; portions are generous and refusing seconds takes real effort.
- Ask to eat with your right hand as the family does. They will show you how.
- Vegetarians and vegans are easy to accommodate here; tell us in advance and nothing needs adapting on the day.
Frequently asked questions
What do you cook in a Sri Lankan village cooking class?
Rice with four to six curries prepared separately: typically dhal, a jackfruit or vegetable curry, a coconut-milk curry, pol sambol pounded with chilli and lime, a green mallum and papadam. Everything is cooked in clay pots over a wood fire.
Is the village cooking experience suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Very much so. Traditional Sri Lankan village cooking is largely plant-based, with coconut milk in place of dairy, so a vegan menu requires no adaptation at all. Meat or fish curries can be added if you want them.
How long does the village experience take?
Three to four hours, including the village transfer, a walk through the gardens and paddy, the cooking itself and lunch together. It works well as a morning before an afternoon at Sigiriya or a safari.
Is it too spicy for children?
It does not have to be. Heat is added at the pot rather than built into every dish, so mild versions are straightforward. Children usually enjoy the coconut scraping and the bullock cart as much as the food.
Where do the village experiences take place?
Mostly in villages around Habarana and Sigiriya in the Cultural Triangle, where lake, paddy and home-garden landscapes sit close together. That also makes it easy to combine with Sigiriya or Pinnawala on the same day.
