Quick answer
Sri Lanka or the Maldives for a honeymoon?
Choose the Maldives if you want pure rest in an overwater villa and have a large budget. Choose Sri Lanka for variety (culture, tea country, safaris and beaches) at a much lower cost. For 10 nights or more between December and March, do both: tour Sri Lanka first, then fly 1 hour 25 minutes to the Maldives to finish.
- Maldives: best for stillness, priciest per night
- Sri Lanka: best for variety and value
- December to March is dry in both
- Zelenso twin-centre from US$2,450 pp, land only
- CMB to Malé flight
- ~1 h 25 min
- Dry in both
- Dec–Mar
- Maldives green tax
- US$12 pp/night
- Maldives T-GST
- 17% + 10% service

The short answer
The two destinations are not really rivals. The Maldives sells one thing extremely well: a private villa over a turquoise lagoon where the hardest decision is whether to snorkel before or after lunch. Sri Lanka sells a whole country in a small space: 2,000-year-old cities, misty tea estates, leopards and elephants, and long beaches.
Choose the Maldives if
- Rest is the entire point of the trip
- You have 7 nights or fewer
- Budget is not the main constraint
- You love snorkelling and diving
Choose Sri Lanka if
- You want to explore as well as relax
- You want more for your money
- You travel between May and October (Sri Lanka's east coast is dry)
- You want wildlife, culture and food on the trip
The couples who are happiest with their choice usually do both. Ten or eleven nights split between the two gives you a honeymoon with stories and a proper rest at the end.

What the Maldives really costs in 2027
Maldives prices look manageable until the extras are added. Room rates are normally quoted before charges, so the price you see on a resort website is not what you pay.
| Cost | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Service charge | 10% | Added to room, food and most services |
| T-GST (tourism tax) | 17% | Rose from 16% on 1 July 2025 |
| Green tax | US$12 per person per night | At resorts since 1 January 2025 (US$6 at small guesthouses on local islands) |
| Departure tax | US$100 economy, US$240 business | Combined with the airport fee since December 2024; usually in your ticket |
| Seaplane transfer | About US$400–850 per person return | Up to about US$1,200 for remote resorts |
| Speedboat transfer | About US$100–490 per person return | For resorts closer to Malé |
| Meal plans | About US$180–350 per person per day for all-inclusive | Half board and full board cost less |
A worked example: 5 nights, mid-luxury overwater villa
Take a villa at US$900 a night. Five nights is US$4,500. Add the 10% service charge and 17% T-GST and the room alone is roughly US$5,700, about US$2,850 each. Add US$60 each in green tax, a seaplane at about US$400–850 each and an all-inclusive plan at US$180–350 each per day, and two people are looking at roughly US$4,200 to US$5,500 each for five nights, before flights to Malé.
What a Sri Lanka honeymoon costs
A Sri Lanka honeymoon costs far less per night, even at the top end, and the price usually covers more: a private car and driver, breakfasts, and often a safari.
| Hotel | Where | Indicative rate (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Weligama | South coast clifftop | From about US$465 a night |
| Wild Coast Tented Lodge | Yala, beside the park | About US$770–960 a night |
| Santani | Hills near Kandy, wellness | From about US$813 a night, full board |
| Ceylon Tea Trails | Tea country planter's bungalows | From about US$790 a night |
| Amangalla | Inside Galle Fort | From about US$1,113 a night |
Most honeymooners mix one or two of these with excellent boutique hotels at a fraction of the price. That is how a private 7-day honeymoon with Zelenso starts at about US$890 (£710 / €835) per person, land only, two sharing. For a full breakdown see what a private Sri Lanka tour costs in 2027.
Weather, month by month
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite coasts, so somewhere on the island is usually dry. The Maldives has one wet season and one dry season. The overlap that matters for a twin-centre is December to March.
| Month | Sri Lanka south & west | Sri Lanka east | Maldives |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Good | Wet | Good |
| February | Good | Mixed | Good |
| March | Good | Mixed | Good |
| April | Good | Good | Mixed |
| May | Wet | Good | Wet |
| June | Wet | Good | Wet |
| July | Wet | Good | Wet |
| August | Wet | Good | Wet |
| September | Wet | Good | Wet |
| October | Mixed | Mixed | Wet |
| November | Mixed | Wet | Wet |
| December | Good | Wet | Mixed |
Travelling between May and September? The Maldives is in its wet season, but Sri Lanka's east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah) is at its best, so a Sri Lanka-only honeymoon is often the better call. Our 2027 month-by-month guide covers every region.
Doing both: how a twin-centre honeymoon works
Sri Lanka and the Maldives are among the easiest twin-centre pairings anywhere. Colombo to Malé takes about 1 hour 25 minutes, and SriLankan Airlines flies it about three times a day; the morning flight leaves Colombo at 07:20 and lands in Malé at 08:15 local time.
Sri Lanka first (5–7 nights)
Cultural Triangle or Kandy, tea country, a safari and perhaps a night in Galle. This is the busier half, best done while you have energy.Fly Colombo to Malé
Your driver drops you at Colombo airport for the short flight. Complete the Maldives IMUGA traveller declaration online within 96 hours before you land. The Maldives to finish (3–5 nights)
Seaplane or speedboat to your resort, then nothing to plan. Ending here means you fly home rested.
Entry is straightforward: Sri Lanka needs an ETA before you fly. Since 25 May 2026 it has been free for UK and many European passport holders, but you still have to apply on eta.gov.lk and the end date of the free scheme has not been published (see our Sri Lanka ETA guide), and the Maldives gives most nationalities a free 30-day visa on arrival.
Twin-centre prices compared
UK operators sell Sri Lanka and Maldives twin-centres at a wide range of prices. These were advertised in autumn 2026. Read what each includes before comparing: some include flights from the UK, and some spend the Sri Lanka nights at a beach hotel rather than touring.
| Who | Length | From (per person) | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tropical Sky | 12 nights | £1,879 | Flights and fees included (as advertised) |
| Hays Travel | 9 nights | £1,965 | 5 nights at a Negombo beach hotel + 4 nights Maldives (offer dated 6 Oct 2026) |
| Travelzoo deal | 10 nights | £2,199 | 6 nights touring Sri Lanka + all-inclusive Maldives (2026 dates) |
| Zelenso Travel | 10 nights | US$2,450 (about £1,960) | Land only: 6 nights private touring with driver + 4 nights overwater villa with meal plan and transfers |
The real difference is the Sri Lanka half. A beach-hotel package sees little of the island; a private touring itinerary covers Kandy, tea country and Yala with your own driver. Ours includes an overwater villa, a Maldives meal plan and resort transfers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sri Lanka or the Maldives better for a honeymoon?
It depends on what you want from the trip. The Maldives is better for pure rest: a villa over the water, a house reef and nothing to organise. Sri Lanka is better for variety and value: ancient cities, tea country, safaris and beaches for much less money. Many couples do both, Sri Lanka first and the Maldives to finish.
Is Sri Lanka cheaper than the Maldives for a honeymoon?
Usually, by a wide margin. Mid-luxury Maldives overwater villas typically cost US$650 to US$1,400 a night before about 26–28% in service charge and tax, plus a US$12 per person green tax each night and transfers. In Sri Lanka, excellent boutique hotels cost far less, and a private 7-day honeymoon tour with Zelenso starts at about US$890 per person, land only.
How long is the flight from Sri Lanka to the Maldives?
About 1 hour 25 minutes from Colombo (CMB) to Malé (MLE). SriLankan Airlines flies the route about three times a day, and other carriers also operate it, which makes a twin-centre honeymoon simple to arrange.
What is the best time for a Sri Lanka and Maldives twin-centre?
December to March. That is the dry season in the Maldives and on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts. Between May and October the Maldives is in its wet season, though Sri Lanka's east coast is dry then.
Should we visit Sri Lanka or the Maldives first?
Sri Lanka first. The touring part of a honeymoon involves early starts and road travel, so it makes sense to do it while you have energy and finish with several nights of complete rest in the Maldives before the long flight home.
How many nights should we spend in each?
Most twin-centre honeymoons spend 4 to 7 nights in Sri Lanka and 3 to 7 in the Maldives. Our 11-day twin-centre uses 6 nights in Sri Lanka and 4 in the Maldives, which is enough to see the highlights without feeling rushed.
What taxes are added to Maldives resort prices?
Resort prices in the Maldives are usually quoted before a 10% service charge and 17% tourism goods and services tax (T-GST, since July 2025). A green tax of US$12 per person per night applies at resorts since January 2025. Departure tax is normally included in your air ticket.
Do we need a visa for the Maldives?
Most nationalities get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival. You must complete the online IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before you arrive. Sri Lanka requires an ETA before travel: since 25 May 2026 it has been free for 40 countries including the UK, but you must still apply on the official site, eta.gov.lk, and no end date for the free scheme has been published.
