Sri Lanka 10-Day Itinerary for 2027: Three Tested Routes, Day by Day

We plan and drive these routes every season. Here are the three that work, with honest drive times, the one train section that is running in 2027, and what to change if you travel between May and September.

Quick answer

What is the best 10-day itinerary for Sri Lanka?

For most first-time visitors: Negombo (1 night), Sigiriya (2), Kandy (1), Nuwara Eliya (1), Ella (1), Yala (1) and Galle (2), travelling by private car and taking the train from Nanu Oya to Ella. It loops the island without doubling back, includes a safari and two beach days, and is best from December to April. From May to September, swap the south coast for Trincomalee on the east coast.

  • Three routes below: Classic, Wildlife & Beaches, Slow & Romantic
  • About 17–24 hours in the car across the whole trip
  • The full Kandy–Ella train is not running; Nanu Oya–Ella is

The three 10-day routes we recommend

All three start and end at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which sits 30 km north of Colombo. Drive times are door to door in a private car with one short stop. Pick a tab to see each day.

  1. Day 1: Land and rest in Negombo

Negombo · 20 min from the airport

Your driver meets you in arrivals. Most long-haul flights land late at night or early morning, so the first day is for sleep, a swim and a sunset walk on the beach.

  2. Day 2: To the Cultural Triangle via Dambulla

    Sigiriya · 3.5–4 h

Leave after breakfast. Stop at the Dambulla cave temple (five painted caves, 2,000 years of use) and arrive in time for a sunset walk or a village lunch.

  3. Day 3: Sigiriya at dawn, Polonnaruwa by bicycle

    Sigiriya · 1 h each way

Climb Sigiriya Rock at opening, before the heat and the coach groups. In the afternoon cycle the ruins of Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital, or swap it for an elephant safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.

  4. Day 4: Spice garden and the Temple of the Tooth

    Kandy · 2.5–3 h

Drive south through Matale's spice gardens. In Kandy, time your visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the evening ceremony, then walk the lake.

  5. Day 5: Up into tea country

    Nuwara Eliya · 2.5–3 h

The road climbs past Ramboda Falls into the tea estates. Tour a working tea factory and taste the season's leaf. Evenings are cool at 1,900 m: bring a jumper.

  6. Day 6: The hill-country train to Ella

Ella · Train 2.5 h; your car meets you

Board at Nanu Oya on the 09:00 train, which reaches Ella at 11:27. This section reopened on 20 June 2026. Your driver takes the luggage by road. Afternoon: the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam's Peak.

  7. Day 7: Down to Yala for an afternoon safari

    Tissamaharama · 2–3 h

Leave Ella mid-morning and drop to the dry zone. Afternoon jeep safari in Yala, the best park on the island for leopards.

  8. Day 8: Along the south coast to Galle

    Galle · 3–3.5 h

Coast road west through Tangalle and Mirissa. Between December and April, add a dawn whale-watching trip from Mirissa (it adds a night).

  9. Day 9: Galle Fort and a beach afternoon

    Galle · None

Walk the ramparts of the 17th-century Dutch fort at sunrise, before the heat. Afternoon at Unawatuna or Jungle Beach.

  10. Day 10: Back to the airport

    Departure · 2.5–3 h by expressway

The Southern Expressway makes this a straightforward run. Allow 3 hours before an international departure.

Choosing

Which route suits you?

Comparison of the three 10-day routes
RouteChoose it ifSkip it ifSafarisBeach days
ClassicIt is your first visit and you want the island's greatest hitsYou dislike changing hotel often1 (Yala)2
Wildlife & BeachesElephants, leopards and whales matter more than templesYou travel in May–August (south coast is rough)32–3
Slow & RomanticIt is a honeymoon or you want two-night staysYou want to tick off every famous sight0–1 (optional)3

If you are torn between Classic and Slow, the deciding question is usually tea country. One night in Nuwara Eliya is enough to see it; two nights in a planter's bungalow is how you feel it.

Honest answer

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Ten days is enough for the south and centre of the island, and it matches how long most Europeans actually stay. Sri Lanka's tourism authority recorded an average stay of 10.3 days for European visitors in 2025, and 11 to 13 days for travellers from Germany.

The constraint is roads, not distance. Sri Lanka is small (about 430 km top to bottom) but the hill country is slow, and there is still no expressway to Kandy. Plan on 40 to 50 km an hour on hill roads.

10 days comfortably covers

  • Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
  • Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth
  • Tea country and the Ella train section
  • One or two safaris
  • Galle Fort and the south coast

10 days does not cover well

  • Jaffna and the far north
  • Trincomalee and the east coast (unless you swap, see below)
  • Anuradhapura as well as Polonnaruwa
  • Adam's Peak (needs a night climb and a recovery day)
  • A proper beach week at the end

With 12 or 14 days, add Anuradhapura and two more beach nights. Our 7, 10, 14 and 21-day itinerary hub shows how the route grows.

Important for 2027

The hill-country train: what is running

That changes less than you might think. The most famous scenery (the tea estates around Pattipola, the Idalgashinna ridge and the run into Ella) is on the section that is open. Our routes drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, then board at Nanu Oya at 09:00, arriving in Ella at 11:27. Your driver carries the luggage and meets you at Ella station.

Reserved seats go on sale 30 days ahead on the Sri Lanka Railways portal and sell out quickly in peak season. Everything about tickets, seats and timetables is in our Kandy to Ella train guide.

Monsoon logic

Travelling May to September? Use the east-coast swap

Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough seas to Galle and Mirissa, while the east coast is calm and sunny. Keep days 1 to 4 and swap the rest:

DaysClassic (Dec–Apr)East-coast swap (May–Sep)
1–4Negombo, Sigiriya, KandySame, and add the Minneriya elephant gathering (July–September)
5–6Nuwara Eliya, train to EllaSame
7Yala safariElla to Arugam Bay (2.5–3.5 h), surf or lagoon safari
8–9South coast and GalleArugam Bay, or Trincomalee via Sigiriya for whales and snorkelling at Pigeon Island
10Galle to the airportLong transfer day: plan an evening flight or a final night near the airport
Yala usually closes for part of September each year; check before booking that month.

Not sure which coast your dates favour? Our month-by-month 2027 guide settles it.

Budget

What 10 days in Sri Lanka costs in 2027

Lessons from the road

Five pacing rules we plan every route by

  1. Never drive more than about 4 hours in a day unless there is a sight on the way that justifies it.
  2. Climb Sigiriya at opening time. By 10:00 the rock is hot and the stairways queue.
  3. Sleep near the safari park so you can take the afternoon drive, when animals move and the light is soft.
  4. Avoid the hill roads after dark. The UK government notes that driving in Sri Lanka is erratic, particularly at night.
  5. End on the coast, not in Colombo. Galle is under 3 hours from the airport by expressway.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes, for a first visit. Ten days covers the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, tea country, a safari and two or three beach days with one hotel change every one to two days. You will not see the north or the east coast as well, so save Jaffna and Trincomalee for a second trip.

What is the best 10-day route for a first visit?

Negombo, Sigiriya (two nights), Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Galle (two nights), then the airport. It follows the island in a loop, so you never drive the same road twice, and it works best from December to April when the south coast is dry.

Can I take the train from Kandy to Ella in 2027?

Not the full journey at the moment. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in November 2025. As of late October 2026 only the Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla section runs, and no reopening date has been announced for Kandy. Itineraries currently drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and take the train from Nanu Oya, which is the most scenic stretch anyway.

How much does a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka cost?

A private 10-day tour with a car, driver and mid-range hotels costs from about US$1,190 per person (land only, two sharing) with Zelenso. Entry fees for a classic route add roughly US$150 to US$180 per person, and international flights from Europe are typically £550 to £800 or €550 to €950 return.

Do I need a private driver for 10 days in Sri Lanka?

You do not need one, but it is the easiest way to fit this much into ten days. Public buses and trains are cheap but slow and do not connect the safari parks. A private car and driver costs from about US$75 a day including fuel, tolls and the driver's lodging, and lets you stop wherever you like.

What is the best month for a 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary?

January to March is the most reliable for the classic route: the south coast is dry, the Cultural Triangle is pleasant and tea country is clear. From May to September, use the east-coast version instead, with Trincomalee or Pasikudah replacing Galle and Mirissa.

Should I spend the last nights on the beach or in Colombo?

The beach. Galle and the south coast are an easy run to the airport on the Southern Expressway, so there is little reason to spend a night in Colombo unless your flight leaves very early.

How many hotels will I stay in over 10 days?

Between five and seven, depending on the route. The Slow & Romantic route uses five bases with two-night stays at each end; the Classic route uses seven to fit everything in.
