In 1890, Scottish entrepreneur Thomas Lipton purchased the bankrupt Dambatenne coffee estates following the devastating leaf blight, replanting them entirely with high-altitude Camellia sinensis tea bushes. His personal motto—'Direct from the tea gardens to the teapot'—revolutionized tea drinking globally by eliminating middleman costs.
Lipton would ride his horse up to this windy cliff edge every morning with a cup of tea to inspect his vast tea plantations stretching below. Today, a bronze bench and statue of Sir Thomas welcome visitors to share that exact same fabled view.
