The Great Elephant Gathering at Minneriya National Park is recognized as one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles. During the dry season from July to October, up to 300 wild Asian elephants congregate on the receding lakebed of the ancient Minneriya tank to graze on fresh shoots, drink, bathe, and socialize in huge family clans.

What is the Great Gathering and why does it happen?

Constructed in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasen, the enormous Minneriya reservoir retains water long after the surrounding scrub jungles dry up. As the water level recedes during the dry months between June and October, it exposes vast swathes of fertile lakebed covered in tender, nutritious green grass.

Elephant herds from Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee migrate along ancient forest corridors toward the lake. By late afternoon, family pods emerge from the scrub: matriarchs leading calves, young bulls engaging in mock wrestling, and tiny weeks-old babies sheltered closely between adult legs.

Book an afternoon safari starting around 2:30 PM: elephants stay in the deep jungle during morning heat and emerge onto the open plains from 3:30 PM onward.
Bring a telephoto lens (70-300mm or longer) or binoculars for intimate wildlife portraits.
Wear neutral, earth-toned clothing (khaki, olive, beige) to blend naturally into the safari surroundings.
A light windbreaker or scarf helps shield you from afternoon dust as your jeep drives along the dirt park tracks.
