Don Arthur de Silva, a wealthy landowner and Mudaliyar (high-ranking colonial administrative officer), commissioned Richmond Castle to resemble an Indian Maharaja's palace he had admired during a royal state visit. Spared no expense, he imported ships laden with Burma teak, Scottish stained-glass windows, and classical Italian marble cherubs to build his dream estate.
The two-storey residence boasts 15 luxurious rooms, a magnificent central ballroom with natural cross-ventilation ventilation shafts, intricate timber carvings, and wide sweeping verandahs overlooking the tranquil Kalu Ganga river.
