Flights from the UK to Sri Lanka in 2027: Direct Routes, Flight Times and Fares

Two non-stop routes from London, one-stop options from the rest of the UK, and a year in which the Gulf hubs could not be taken for granted. Here is who flies, how long it takes, what it costs and how we plan the first day around your landing time.

Quick answer

Are there direct flights to Sri Lanka from the UK?

Yes, two, both from London. SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from Heathrow, usually daily, in about 10 h 25 min. British Airways restarted non-stop flights from Gatwick on 23 October 2026, three times a week for the winter. From anywhere else in the UK you change once, usually in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul.

  • Heathrow: SriLankan, usually daily, about 10 h 25 min
  • Gatwick: British Airways, 3 a week, winter 2026/27
  • Economy returns typically £550–800
  • Sri Lanka is 5 h 30 ahead in winter, 4 h 30 in summer

Direct flights

Are there direct flights to Sri Lanka from the UK?

Yes: SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Colombo, and since 23 October 2026 British Airways flies non-stop from London Gatwick three times a week. They are the only two non-stop routes from the UK, and both land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo. No other UK airport has a direct flight to Sri Lanka.

SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow

The national airline's UL504 leaves Heathrow Terminal 3 in the evening. On 3 November 2026 it was scheduled out at 20:40 and into Colombo at 12:35 local time the next day, a block time of about 10 hours 25 minutes, on an Airbus A330-300. The return, UL503, was scheduled out of Colombo at 12:55 and into Heathrow at 19:10. Schedule sites list the route as daily, but SriLankan has not published its winter 2026/27 timetable in a form we could check, so treat it as usually daily and confirm on srilankan.com for your dates.

Departure times move by 10 to 20 minutes between seasons, and the aircraft and cabin can change at short notice, so check your booking rather than relying on any table, including ours.

British Airways from Gatwick

British Airways returned to Sri Lanka on 23 October 2026, when BA2045 left Gatwick for Colombo and landed the next morning. BA last served Colombo, via Malé, until March 2015. The new route is non-stop and runs three times a week through the winter season (late October to late March) on a Boeing 777-200ER with World Traveller (economy), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and Club World (business).

The filed schedule has BA2045 leaving Gatwick at 17:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and reaching Colombo at 09:00 the next day. The return, BA2044, leaves Colombo at 11:00 and lands at Gatwick at 17:00 the same day. BA calls it a winter route: it has not said whether it will fly in summer 2027, so if you are travelling between April and October, assume Heathrow is the only non-stop until BA says otherwise.

Comparison

UK to Sri Lanka flights compared

For most UK travellers the choice is between the two London non-stops and a one-stop ticket through a Gulf, Turkish or Indian hub. The table lists the main options as of early November 2026. Frequencies on several one-stop routes changed repeatedly during 2026, so treat the "frequency" column as a guide and check the airline for your dates.

One-stop times are our approximate ranges from typical connections, not published figures. IndiGo, which connected Manchester and Heathrow via India, ended its UK flights in late August and late October 2026.

Fly direct if

  • You live within easy reach of Heathrow or Gatwick
  • Your dates are fixed, for example a school holiday
  • You want to avoid a Gulf connection while schedules settle
  • You are travelling with children or older parents

One stop can make more sense if

  • You live in the north of England, Scotland or Wales
  • You want a lie-flat business seat at a lower price
  • You fly in summer, when BA's Gatwick route is not scheduled
  • The direct fare on your dates is much higher than one-stop
Flight time

How long is the flight from the UK to Sri Lanka?

A non-stop flight from London to Colombo takes about 10 to 10.5 hours, and the return about 11.5 to 12 hours. Eastbound flights ride the jet stream; westbound flights fly into it, which is why the trip home is longer.

On the published schedules checked in November 2026, SriLankan's UL504 was blocked at about 10 hours 25 minutes outbound and UL503 at about 11 hours 45 minutes back. BA's filed Gatwick times work out at about 10 hours outbound and 11 hours 30 minutes back. Those are gate-to-gate block times; actual flying time is often a little shorter.

With one stop, the total depends on the connection more than the distance. The two legs via Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi add up to around 11 to 12 hours of flying, so a tight 2-hour connection gives about 13 to 14 hours from London. A 5-hour layover, common on cheaper fares, takes it towards 17 hours. Routes via Istanbul and India are usually a little longer in the air. From a regional airport, add any connection to London or the hub.

Outside London

Flights to Sri Lanka from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow

There are no direct flights to Sri Lanka from any UK airport outside London, so from Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland or the South West you change planes once, usually at a Gulf hub or Istanbul. Often that is quicker overall than getting to Heathrow for the direct flight.

Before 2026, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad between them served most of the UK's larger regional airports, and Turkish Airlines flew to Istanbul from many more. In 2026 the picture became less tidy. In spring, Emirates was running about three-quarters of its planned network, and frequencies on routes such as Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh were reported as lower and changeable. A daily Birmingham service was listed for May 2026. Etihad was selling Manchester to Colombo returns from about £752 for November and December 2026 dates on its own site.

Some practical points for regional departures:

  • Search your own airport first. A one-stop ticket from Manchester or Edinburgh is often similar in price to the Heathrow direct, without the train or a night near the airport.
  • Keep it on one ticket. A single booking protects you if the first flight is late and you miss the connection. Two separate tickets do not.
  • Look at Istanbul. Turkish Airlines flies to Istanbul from many UK airports and was listed as flying Istanbul to Colombo daily from 25 October 2026. It is a sensible alternative if you would rather not connect in the Gulf.
  • IndiGo has gone. IndiGo's Manchester flights to India ended on 31 August 2026 and its Heathrow to Mumbai flights paused from late October, so older advice recommending IndiGo via Mumbai is out of date.

If you are coming from the north of England or Scotland and want the direct flight anyway, a domestic connection or train to London works, but leave a generous gap: a missed long-haul flight on a separate ticket is your loss, not the airline's.

2026 disruption

The Gulf hub disruption: what happened in 2026 and what it means now

From 28 February 2026, conflict in the Middle East closed Gulf airspace and cancelled thousands of flights through Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi; services have since largely returned, but you should still check before you book and again before you fly. We set out the timeline because it affects which ticket we would recommend, not to put anyone off.

Timeline of the 2026 Gulf flight disruption affecting UK to Sri Lanka routes
DateWhat happened
28 Feb – 1 Mar 2026Airspace closures across the Gulf. SriLankan Airlines cancels its Middle East flights.
3 Mar 2026Sri Lanka's aviation authorities report 205 flights to and from the country cancelled.
6–18 Mar 2026Etihad restarts limited flights (from 6 Mar). Qatar's airspace partially reopens on 7 Mar; Qatar Airways restores transit connections through Doha from 18 Mar.
Spring 2026Emirates runs a reduced network, around 77% of its plan by late April.
1 Jul 2026Qatar Airways is back to five daily Doha–Colombo flights (35 a week).
Jun – Aug 2026Emirates runs at least three daily Dubai–Colombo flights and adds a second daily A350 from 8 Aug.
Jan – Sep 2026UK arrivals in Sri Lanka down 0.7% on 2025, against falls of 9–21% from Germany, France and the Netherlands (SLTDA).
30 Sep 2026EASA revises its bulletin advising EU airlines not to fly over Persian Gulf waters except to land or take off there, valid to 16 Nov 2026.

What the official advice says

The UK Foreign Office page for Sri Lanka, last updated on 21 September 2026, says escalation in the Middle East has caused widespread travel disruption and that "some flights from Colombo to the UK via Middle Eastern hubs may be delayed, postponed, or re-routed". It asks British travellers to check the advice for any country they transit through and to "consider alternative carriers or routes where necessary". It does not advise against travel to Sri Lanka. Our Sri Lanka safety guide covers the rest of that advice.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) bulletin CZIB-2026-07R3 is aimed at airlines, not passengers. It advises EU operators not to fly over the waters of the Persian Gulf and the western Gulf of Oman except to land at or take off from airports there. It was valid to 16 November 2026 when we checked and may be renewed. In practice that affects routings and flight times more than whether your flight runs.

How it shows up in arrivals

Sri Lanka's inbound tour operators linked the 2026 fall in European visitors to transit disruption rather than anything in Sri Lanka itself. Gulf News quoted the president of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators making that point in September. The UK held up best of the big European markets, which fits: it is the only one with direct flights, and from October it has two.

Fares

How much are flights from the UK to Sri Lanka?

An economy return from the UK to Sri Lanka usually costs about £550 to £800, with the cheapest fares in May and the highest in July and over Christmas and New Year. Premium economy and business fares move with demand and vary far more.

KAYAK publishes the median return price from its users' searches over the past 12 months. When we checked on 4 November 2026, it gave these figures for London to Colombo:

London to Colombo return fares by month, KAYAK search data checked 4 November 2026
PeriodTypical economy returnWhat drives it
MayAbout £611 (cheapest month)Start of the south-west monsoon; quieter on the west and south coasts
JulyAbout £948 (dearest month)UK school summer holidays; east-coast season in Sri Lanka
NovemberUsually £572–687Before the Christmas peak; south coast getting into season
DecemberAbout £910Christmas and New Year, the busiest weeks of the year
Lowest fares seen recently£522–649Typical cheapest returns across airlines
KAYAK figures are medians of search results over the previous 12 months, not quotes, and KAYAK did not publish every month. February half-term and Easter also tend to cost more because of school holidays; we have no sourced figure for them.

On the direct routes specifically, British Airways advertised Gatwick returns from £524 (including taxes and charges) in its 26 October 2026 release, down from "from £620" when the route was announced in March. KAYAK's cheapest recent SriLankan direct return from Heathrow was £690. Launch fares sell out first, so expect to pay more on popular dates.

When to book

KAYAK's data suggests booking around 13 weeks ahead for the lowest prices on this route. For Christmas, New Year and February half-term we would go earlier than that: the direct flights have fewer seats than the combined one-stop options, and they are the first to fill. The flights are also only part of the cost. Our Sri Lanka private tour cost guide breaks down the rest, from hotels to entry fees.

Time zone

What is the time difference between the UK and Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the UK in winter and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer, because Sri Lanka stays on UTC+5:30 all year and the UK moves its clocks.

Time difference between the UK and Sri Lanka
UK periodUK time zoneSri Lanka ahead byExample
Late Oct to late Mar (e.g. 25 Oct 2026 – 28 Mar 2027)GMT (UTC+0)5 h 30 minNoon in London is 17:30 in Colombo
Late Mar to late OctBST (UTC+1)4 h 30 minNoon in London is 16:30 in Colombo

The half-hour offset catches people out when booking calls home and checking flight times. Flight times on tickets are always local, which is why the BA return looks like a 6-hour flight (11:00 in Colombo, 17:00 at Gatwick) when it is really about 11.5 hours.

Jet lag is mild compared with the Far East: flying east overnight loses you sleep rather than a whole day. Most of our UK guests feel normal after one good night, especially if the first day is gentle.

Arrival

Arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

Every long-haul flight from the UK lands at Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 32 km north of Colombo and 20 minutes from Negombo. A second passenger terminal, funded by JICA, is due to restart construction from November 2026 with about 30 months of work, so do not expect it before 2028 to 2029.

  1. Get your ETA before you fly

British passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, free since 25 May 2026 but still compulsory. Apply on eta.gov.lk only; our ETA guide explains the steps and the look-alike sites to avoid. Your passport should have at least six months of validity on arrival.
  2. Immigration and baggage

Have your ETA approval and return flight details ready. Queues can be long when several flights land together, so keep your documents in your hand luggage.
  3. SIM card and cash

Before you exit, Dialog and Mobitel counters sell tourist SIMs and eSIMs (Dialog tourist packs cost about LKR 1,399–2,499), and bank counters change pounds into rupees. Change enough for tips and small purchases; cards work in most hotels.
  4. Meet your driver

With a Zelenso tour, your chauffeur-guide waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and tracks your flight, so a delay does not leave you stranded.

Drive times from the airport

These are the times we plan with, the same as in our itinerary guides. Colombo traffic between about 07:00 and 09:00 and 16:00 and 19:00 can add an hour.

Drive times from Bandaranaike International Airport
ToTypical driveNotes
NegomboAbout 20 minThe easy first night after a long flight
ColomboAbout 35–60 minKatunayake Expressway; longer at rush hour
Kandy3–3.5 hNo expressway yet
Sigiriya / Dambulla3.5–4 hGood if you land in the morning
Galle2.5–3 hExpressway most of the way
EllaAbout 6 hToo far for an arrival day

Mattala (HRI), the international airport in the south, is not a practical alternative from the UK. It had no regular scheduled international flights in 2026 and mainly handles seasonal charters.

A private airport pickup and drop-off is included in every Zelenso tour. If you only need a car and driver, our private driver service costs from US$75 (about £58) a day for a sedan, including fuel, tolls and the driver's lodging.

Plan the first days

How to plan your first days around your flight

Your landing time decides the first day: arrive in the morning and you can drive straight inland; arrive after midday and the first night is usually best spent in Negombo, 20 minutes from the airport.

Recommended first night by arrival time
You landTypical flightsWe usually suggest
Early morning (before 09:00)Many one-stop connections; BA from Gatwick (09:00)Drive to Sigiriya or Kandy after breakfast and a coffee stop. Rest in the afternoon
Late morning to early afternoonSriLankan from Heathrow (about 12:30–13:00)Negombo for one night, or straight to Kandy or the Cultural Triangle if you slept well on board
Evening or nightSome one-stop connectionsNegombo or an airport hotel, then start the route the next morning

Negombo first, or straight to Sigiriya?

A night in Negombo costs you half a day but gives you a swim, a proper sleep and a fresh start. Going straight to the Cultural Triangle saves a hotel change but means 3.5 to 4 hours in a car after 10 hours in a plane. For couples who sleep on planes, we often go straight inland after a morning arrival. For families and anyone who does not, we book Negombo. Our 7-day itinerary includes an "easy" route built around a Negombo start.

Route the trip to suit the flight home

The departure flight matters as much as the arrival. SriLankan's UL503 leaves around 13:00 and BA's BA2044 at 11:00, so you need to be at the airport by about 10:00 or 08:00. That rules out driving in from the hill country on the morning of departure. A loop that ends on the south coast works well, because Galle is 2.5 to 3 hours from the airport by expressway; for an 11:00 departure, though, we would usually move you to Negombo or an airport hotel for the last night. Our 14-day itinerary shows a full loop that finishes this way.

Checklist

Booking checklist for UK to Sri Lanka flights

Book on one ticket, check the hub situation, get your ETA and send your flight numbers to whoever meets you. This is the order we suggest to our UK guests.

  1. Pick the season first. December to March suits the west and south coasts and the hill country; May to September suits the east coast. See our Sri Lanka holidays from the UK page for ideas by month.
  2. Compare the direct flights with one-stop from your nearest airport, including the cost and time of getting to Heathrow or Gatwick.
  3. Check the transit country's FCDO advice if you are connecting, and keep everything on one booking.
  4. Check the baggage allowance of the exact fare you are buying.
  5. Apply for your ETA on eta.gov.lk once your flights are confirmed.
  6. Send your flight numbers to your tour company or hotel so the pickup tracks your actual landing time.

For airline cabins, lounges and the general airline directory, see our flights to Sri Lanka page. Zelenso does not sell flights; we plan the land part of the trip around whichever flight you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights to Sri Lanka from the UK?

Yes, two, both from London. SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from Heathrow to Colombo, usually daily. British Airways restarted a non-stop Gatwick to Colombo service on 23 October 2026, three times a week for the winter season. There are no direct flights from Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland or any other UK airport.

How long is the flight from the UK to Sri Lanka?

About 10 to 10.5 hours non-stop from London to Colombo, and about 11.5 to 12 hours on the way back because of headwinds. With one stop in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, allow roughly 13 to 17 hours door to door, depending on the connection.

Which airport do you fly into in Sri Lanka?

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, about 32 km north of Colombo and 20 minutes from Negombo. It is the only airport with regular long-haul scheduled flights. Mattala in the south handles only seasonal charters and occasional services.

Is British Airways flying to Sri Lanka again?

Yes. British Airways flew its first Gatwick to Colombo service in about ten years on 23 October 2026, landing on 24 October. It runs three times a week through the winter season with a Boeing 777-200ER and economy, premium economy and business cabins. BA quoted return fares from £524 in its 26 October 2026 release.

Is it safe to fly to Sri Lanka via Dubai or Doha?

Gulf hub flights are operating again after the airspace closures that began on 28 February 2026, but schedules have been less predictable. The UK Foreign Office says some flights via Middle Eastern hubs may be delayed, postponed or re-routed. Book a through ticket on one booking, check the FCDO advice for your transit country, and consider a direct flight if your dates are fixed.

How much is a flight from London to Sri Lanka?

Economy returns usually cost about £550 to £800. KAYAK search data checked in November 2026 put the cheapest typical London to Colombo returns at £522 to £649, with May the cheapest month (around £611) and July and December the dearest (around £948 and £910).

What is the time difference between the UK and Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is on UTC+5:30 all year and does not change its clocks. It is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the UK in winter (GMT) and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer (BST).

Do I need a visa to fly to Sri Lanka from the UK?

You need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you fly. Since 25 May 2026 the 30-day tourist ETA is free for British passport holders, but you must still apply on the official site, eta.gov.lk. Airlines can refuse boarding without one.

Does Zelenso book flights?

No. Zelenso plans and runs private land tours in Sri Lanka, and you book your flights directly with the airline or your travel agent. Send us your flight numbers and we time the first and last days of your trip around them, with a driver waiting in arrivals.
