Three 14-day Sri Lanka itineraries, day by day
The best two-week route for most people is the Classic 14: a loop from the ancient cities of the north, through Kandy and tea country, down to Yala and along the south coast. All three routes below start and end at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and use a private car and driver. Drive times are door to door with one short stop. Every leg shared with our 10-day itinerary uses the same figure, so you can borrow days from either guide.

Our fixed-price 14-day tour leans further into wildlife than the Classic route above. It spends two nights in Wilpattu and two in Yala, adds Udawalawe and a trek in the Knuckles range, and finishes in Colombo instead of on the beach. If you want the beach days, the 12-day Best of Sri Lanka tour (from US$1,290) includes Sinharaja rainforest, two nights in Mirissa and Galle Fort. We will also price any of the three routes here as they are written.
Which two-week route suits you?
Your travel month decides the route first, and your energy decides it second. Here is how the three compare.
| Route | Best months | Choose it if | Hotel bases | Beach nights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic 14 | Dec–Apr | It is your first visit and you want the whole island loop | 9 | 2 |
| East-Coast 14 | May–Sep | You travel in the summer holidays or want calm-sea swimming | 7 | 5 |
| Slow 14 | Jan–Apr | It is a honeymoon, or you would rather stay three nights than one | 6 | 4–5 |
The Classic 14 is the busiest of the three, with nine hotels, but no day has more than about four hours of driving. It also has three days with little or no time in the car: day 7 in Kandy, day 10 in Ella and day 13 in Mirissa. If nine hotels in two weeks sounds like too many, cut the Wilpattu night (see below) and give the beach a third night.
Is 2 weeks enough for Sri Lanka? What 14 days covers
Two weeks is enough to see the south and centre of Sri Lanka without rushing, and it is close to how long many Europeans actually stay. Sri Lanka's tourism authority recorded an average of 10.3 days for European visitors in 2025, with Dutch travellers staying 12 to 14 days and Germans 11 to 13. The extra four days over a 10-day trip do not add new regions so much as remove the rush: the core loop has about 22 hours of driving whether you take 10 days or 14.
What 14 days adds over our 10-day routes: the first capital at Anuradhapura or a quiet safari in Wilpattu, two-night stays in Kandy and Ella instead of one, and enough beach time to recover before the flight home. What it still does not cover well is Jaffna and the far north (two or three days on their own), or the east and south coasts in the same trip, because their good seasons are opposite. If you only have a week, our 7-day itinerary shows which half of the island to choose.
Anuradhapura and Wilpattu: are they worth two of your 14 days?
Anuradhapura and Wilpattu are worth the two days if you like ancient sites or want a safari without a queue of jeeps; otherwise use the days for the beach. Both sit north-west of Sigiriya, so they fit naturally between the airport and the Cultural Triangle.
Anuradhapura was the island's capital for more than a thousand years. Its sacred city holds the Sri Maha Bodhi, a fig tree said to have grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha is said to have reached enlightenment, and dagobas that were among the largest brick structures of the ancient world. It is best seen by bicycle in the late afternoon. Wilpattu, an hour to the west, is Sri Lanka's largest national park. Its forest and lakes hold leopards and sloth bears, and it is usually much quieter than Yala.
| Site | Price per person | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sigiriya Rock Fortress | US$35 | Central Cultural Fund (Oct 2026) |
| Anuradhapura sacred city | US$30 | Central Cultural Fund (Oct 2026) |
| Polonnaruwa | US$30 | Central Cultural Fund (Oct 2026) |
| Dambulla cave temple | About LKR 3,000 (~US$9) | Third-party reports (Mar 2026) |
| Temple of the Tooth, Kandy | About LKR 2,000 (~US$6) | Third-party reports (Mar 2026) |
| Wilpattu National Park | About US$25, plus jeep | Third-party reports (Mar 2026) |
| Yala National Park | About US$45, plus jeep | Third-party reports (Mar 2026) |
| Jeep hire, half day | About US$45–80 per jeep | Local operators (2026); Yala at the top end |

To skip the north, drive from Negombo straight to Sigiriya on day 2 (3.5 to 4 hours, stopping at Dambulla). That frees two nights. Spend them in Galle on the way out, or add a second night by the beach.
Where to add rest days on a 14-day trip
Put rest days where the trip naturally slows down: after the ancient cities, after the train, and at the end on the coast. A rest day here means no hotel change and less than an hour in the car. It does not mean doing nothing. These are the rules we plan by:
Not on day 2
Day 1 in Negombo is already a rest day, so a second one straight after it wastes the trip's best slack. Save it for when the early starts have added up.After the Cultural Triangle (day 7)
Three or four days of early climbs and ruins in the heat add up. A slow day in Kandy, with the botanic gardens and a long lunch, resets the trip before the hills. In Ella, after the train (day 10)
Ella is the easiest place on the island to stay put: walks from the door, cafés, and cooler air. Two nights here also protect you if the train is full and you go by road.At least one on the coast (day 13)
Finish with two nights in the same beach hotel. The final drive to the airport from Mirissa or Galle is 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the expressway.A spare day for weather
Heavy rain can close a hill road for hours after a landslip. On the Slow 14 the long beach stay absorbs that; on the Classic 14, keep the Kandy rest day flexible.
What to swap for surf, honeymoon or kids
Two weeks is long enough to bend the route around one interest without losing the highlights. These swaps keep the loop intact:
| Trip | Swap out | Swap in | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surf (Nov–Apr) | Mirissa, days 12–13 | Weligama or Hiriketiya, plus Galle | Weligama Bay has sand-bottom beginner waves; Hiriketiya suits beginners and improvers |
| Surf (May–Oct) | Yala and the south coast | Ella to Arugam Bay (2.5–3.5 h), 4–5 nights | The east coast's surf season; Main Point and Whisky Point are the famous breaks |
| Honeymoon | Wilpattu, Anuradhapura and one-night stops | The Slow 14, or 9 nights in Sri Lanka and 4 in the Maldives | Fewer hotels, a planter's bungalow and a long beach stay |
| Kids | Wilpattu and Yala's early start | Udawalawe (open grassland, the Elephant Transit Home) and a family-friendly beach | Shorter drives; elephants are easier to see in open country |
| Wildlife | One Kandy night and one beach night | A full day in Yala and an extra Wilpattu safari | More time in parks, closer to our fixed-price 14-day tour |
For surfers, our Sri Lanka surfing guide sorts the breaks by level and season. Couples comparing an island-only trip with a twin-centre one should read Maldives vs Sri Lanka for a honeymoon; our honeymoon tours include a Sri Lanka and Maldives twin-centre from US$2,450 per person. Families should start with Sri Lanka with kids, which sets drive limits and beaches by age, and then see our family holidays. If you are adding more parks, the Yala National Park guide explains blocks, closures and leopard odds.
The hill-country train in a 2-week itinerary
All three routes drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (2.5 to 3 hours) and board at Nanu Oya on the 09:00 Podi Menike, due in Ella at 11:27. That is the section with the famous views: the tea estates around Pattipola, the Idalgashinna ridge and the run into Ella. Your driver takes the luggage by road and meets you at Ella station. A second train leaves Nanu Oya at 14:30 every day except Wednesday, and the Ella Odyssey runs on Wednesdays at 13:00 (operator timetable, 25 October 2026).
Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel on the Sri Lanka Railways portal and need your passport number. Sit on the left for the views from Nanu Oya to Ella. Our Kandy to Ella train guide has fares, timetables and what to do if the train is full.
Travelling May to September? Use the East-Coast 14
From May to September, spend the beach half of your two weeks on the east coast. The south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to Galle, Mirissa and the west coast in those months, while Pasikudah and Trincomalee are calm and dry. The east coast has the opposite pattern, with its wet season from about November to January.
The East-Coast 14 keeps everything inland. It spends three nights near Sigiriya, timed for the elephant Gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla from about July to September, and then five nights on the coast: two at Pasikudah's shallow bay and three at Trincomalee for Pigeon Island and the boats. From there it returns inland to Kandy, the tea country and Ella. The drives between the east-coast stops were checked against route planners and transfer operators in November 2026. Sigiriya to Pasikudah and Pasikudah to Trincomalee are each about 110 km, or 2 to 2.5 hours with a stop. The longest day is Trincomalee to Kandy, at 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
Two cautions. Yala's main blocks usually close for a few weeks around September (in 2026, from 14 September to 15 October), so do not plan the south then. And the hills catch the same monsoon, so expect mist in Nuwara Eliya. Ella, on the drier eastern side, is usually clearer. Our month-by-month 2027 guide shows which coast suits your dates.
What 2 weeks in Sri Lanka costs: a line-by-line budget
Two weeks in Sri Lanka with a private car and driver costs about US$1,695–US$2,790 per person with mid-range hotels, for two people sharing and before flights. That is roughly US$121 to US$199 per person per day. The table uses the same model as our private tour cost guide: shoulder season, two safaris (Wilpattu and Yala) and the train.
| Item | Mid-range (4★) | Boutique | Luxury |

| Per person per day | US$121–US$199 | US$187–US$340 | US$351–US$749 |
The car is the cheapest part of a two-week trip. Zelenso's private car and driver costs US$75 a day for a sedan (US$1,050 for 14 days, shared between you), US$105 for a van or US$155 for a Prado. Each rate includes fuel, tolls and the driver's lodging. Hotels make the biggest difference: the same route costs three to four times as much in luxury lodges as in good 4-star hotels. A tip of US$10 to 15 a day for your driver is customary.

Frequently asked questions
Is two weeks enough for Sri Lanka?
Two weeks is the right length for a first visit that covers the whole south and centre of the island at a sensible pace. Fourteen days fits the ancient cities, Kandy, tea country, the Ella train, a safari and two to five beach nights depending on the route, with a slow day every three or four days. Jaffna and the far north still need a separate trip.
What is the best 2-week itinerary for Sri Lanka?
Between December and April: Negombo (1 night), Wilpattu (1), Anuradhapura (1), Sigiriya (2), Kandy (2), Nuwara Eliya (1), Ella (2), Yala (1) and Mirissa (2), with the train from Nanu Oya to Ella and Galle Fort on the last day. From May to September, replace Yala and the south coast with Pasikudah and Trincomalee on the east coast.
How much does 2 weeks in Sri Lanka cost?
With a private car and driver and mid-range hotels, 14 days costs about US$1,695–US$2,790 per person for two people sharing, before flights, using our cost guide's model. Zelenso's 14-day private tour starts at US$1,390 (£1,110 / €1,300) per person, land only. Return flights from the UK are typically £550 to £800 in economy.
Where should I add rest days on a 14-day Sri Lanka trip?
Put one after the Cultural Triangle (a slow day in Kandy), one in Ella after the train, and one or two on the coast at the end. Never put a rest day on day 2: you will want it later, when the drives and early starts have added up.
Should I include Anuradhapura and Wilpattu in two weeks?
Include them if you like ancient sites or quieter safaris; skip them if you want more beach. They add two nights and about three hours of extra driving. Anuradhapura is the island's first capital and costs US$30 to enter; Wilpattu is the largest national park and far less crowded than Yala.
Can I do the Kandy to Ella train on a 2-week trip in 2027?
Not the full route at the moment. As of late October 2026 no train reaches Kandy after a landslide at Kadigamuwa, and only the Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla section runs. Drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and board at Nanu Oya at 09:00. The full line may reopen, but no date has been announced, so check before you travel.
Which 14-day route works in July and August?
The East-Coast 14: Sigiriya for three nights with the Minneriya elephant gathering, then Pasikudah and Trincomalee for five beach nights, then Kandy, tea country and the Ella train. The east coast is calm and dry from May to September, when the south-west monsoon brings rough seas to Galle and Mirissa.
Is it better to do 12 or 14 days in Sri Lanka?
Twelve days covers the same loop with one fewer rest day and one fewer beach night. Fourteen days lets you add Anuradhapura or Wilpattu, or simply slow down. Zelenso's 12-day tour starts at US$1,290 per person and the 14-day tour at US$1,390, land only, two sharing.
