One Week in Sri Lanka: Three 7-Day Itineraries for 2027, Day by Day

A week in Sri Lanka works if you pick one half of the island and do it well. These are the three one-week routes we recommend, with honest drive times, the train section that runs in 2027, a 5-day cut and what the week costs.

Quick answer

What is the best 7-day itinerary for Sri Lanka?

For a first visit: Negombo (1 night), Sigiriya (1), Kandy (1), Nuwara Eliya (1) and Ella (2), by private car, with the train from Nanu Oya to Ella. It covers Sigiriya Rock, the Temple of the Tooth and tea country with one rest day. Prefer a beach and a safari? Swap Sigiriya for Yala and the south coast.

  • Three routes: Culture & Tea, Safari & South Coast, Easy Coast
  • One week covers one region well, not the whole island
  • No train reaches Kandy; Nanu Oya–Ella runs daily
  • Private 7-day tours from US$749 per person, land only

Three one-week routes for Sri Lanka, day by day

The best one-week route depends on what you want more of: sights, wildlife and sea, or rest. All three start and end at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), 30 km north of Colombo, and use a private car and driver. Drive times are door to door with one short stop, and they match the figures in our 10-day itinerary, so you can move days between the two. Pick a tab to see each day.

Time in the car
About 15–16 h in the car, plus 2.5 h on the train
  1. Day 1: Land and rest in Negombo

Negombo · 20 min from the airport

Your driver meets you in arrivals. Most flights from Europe land overnight or early morning, so day 1 is for sleep, a swim and an early dinner by the sea.

  2. Day 2: Dambulla cave temple, then Sigiriya

    Sigiriya · 3.5–4 h

Leave after breakfast and stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way. Arrive by mid-afternoon and climb Pidurangala for the sunset view of Sigiriya Rock.

  3. Day 3: Sigiriya Rock at opening, then Kandy

    Kandy · 2.5–3 h

Climb Sigiriya at opening, before the heat and the queues, and be on the road by late morning. Stop at a Matale spice garden and reach Kandy for the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth.

  4. Day 4: Up into tea country

    Nuwara Eliya · 2.5–3 h

Morning at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, then the climb past Ramboda Falls. Tour a working tea factory. Nights at 1,900 m are cool, so pack a jumper.

  5. Day 5: The hill-country train to Ella

Ella (2 nights) · Train 2.5 h; your car meets you

Board at Nanu Oya on the 09:00 train, due in Ella at 11:27. Your driver takes the luggage by road. Afternoon at the Nine Arches Bridge, then Little Adam's Peak for sunset.

  6. Day 6: A slow Ella morning

    Ella · None

Hike Ella Rock early (allow about 3–4 hours return), or sleep in and take a cooking class. This is the trip's one unhurried day, and you need it before the drive home.

  7. Day 7: Back to the airport

    Departure · About 6 h

The long day of the week. Leave Ella after breakfast for an evening flight, with a lunch stop on the way. If your flight leaves before about 17:00, end the route in Kandy instead and cut the Ella night.

Ready-made version7 Days: Discover the Highlights of Sri LankaSigiriya, Kandy, tea country, the Nanu Oya–Ella train, a Yala safari and Mirissa, with hotels, car and chauffeur-guide.
From US$749 ppSee the trip →

Our ready-made 7-day tour is fuller than any of the three routes above. It fits Sigiriya, Ella, a Yala safari and a Mirissa beach day into one week by keeping most stops to a single night. That suits travellers who want to see as much as possible and do not mind early starts. If that sounds tiring, one of the routes here is the better plan, and we can price any of them.

Choosing

Which one-week route suits you?

Choose by the last two days: inland routes end with a long drive back, while coastal routes end close to the airport. Here is how the three compare.

Comparison of the three 7-day routes
RouteChoose it ifSkip it ifLongest driveBeach days
Culture & TeaIt is your first visit and Sigiriya and the train are the pointYou want to finish on a beachAbout 6 h (day 7)0
Safari & South CoastLeopards, whales and the sea matter more than ancient citiesYou travel May–September (rough seas in the south)3–3.5 h1–2
Easy Coast & CultureYou are jet-lagged, travelling with parents or want only three hotelsYou want to see tea country or a safariAbout 4–4.5 h (day 4)2–3

The Culture & Tea route has one awkward day: Ella to the airport takes about six hours, so it needs an evening flight. If yours leaves earlier, end the week with a second night in Kandy (3 to 3.5 hours from the airport) and skip Ella, or take the Safari & South Coast route, which finishes 2.5 to 3 hours away on the expressway.

The Easy route suits older travellers and anyone arriving after a sleepless night flight. It still includes Kandy and Galle Fort, but it uses three hotels rather than five, and three nights at Bentota give you a buffer if the weather turns. Its one long day is Kandy to Bentota. Route planners disagree on that drive (from 2 hours 45 minutes to about 5 hours), and there is no expressway out of Kandy, so we allow 4 to 4.5 hours with a lunch stop.

Honest answer

Is one week in Sri Lanka enough? What 7 days can and cannot do

One week is enough for one region of Sri Lanka, not for the whole classic loop. The island is only about 430 km from top to bottom, but there is still no expressway to Kandy and hill roads average 40 to 50 km an hour. The classic route (Sigiriya, Kandy, tea country, Ella, Yala and the south coast) has about 22 hours of driving. Squeezed into seven days, that is more than three hours in the car every day with no rest.

Most Europeans stay longer than a week for this reason. Sri Lanka's tourism authority recorded an average stay of 10.3 days for European visitors in 2025. If you can add three days, our 10-day routes join both halves of the island into one loop. With two weeks, the 14-day itinerary adds the ancient cities of the north and real beach time.

One week covers well

  • Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy
  • Tea country and the Nanu Oya–Ella train
  • One safari (Yala or Minneriya) and one coast
  • Galle Fort as a final stop
  • A single rest day, if you protect it

One week does not cover

  • Sigiriya, Ella, Yala and a beach without rushing
  • Both Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa
  • Jaffna, the far north and the east and south coasts together
  • Adam's Peak (a night climb and a recovery day)
  • Whale watching and a Yala safari plus the Cultural Triangle

The honest test: if a plan has you changing hotel every single night, it is a 10-day trip that has been compressed. Drop a stop rather than a rest day.

Shorter still

Only 5 days in Sri Lanka? The itinerary we would do

With five days, base yourself in two places: Sigiriya for two nights and Kandy for two nights. It needs a morning landing, keeps every drive to four hours or less and covers the island's most famous sights. It is also the right shape for a stopover before or after the Maldives.

A 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary
DayBaseDrivePlan
Day 1Sigiriya (2 nights)3.5–4 h from the airportLand in the morning and drive straight to the Cultural Triangle, stopping at the Dambulla cave temple.
Day 2Sigiriya1 h each way (optional)Sigiriya Rock at opening. Afternoon: Polonnaruwa by bicycle or an elephant safari at Minneriya.
Day 3Kandy (2 nights)2.5–3 hSpice garden on the way, then the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth.
Day 4KandyNoneRoyal Botanic Gardens and the lake. A day without the car before the flight.
Day 5Departure3–3.5 hBack to the airport. Allow 3 hours before an international departure.

What the 5-day cut gives up: tea country, the train and any beach. If you care more about the hill country than the ancient cities, do Kandy for one night, Nuwara Eliya for one and Ella for two instead. Bear in mind that the drive back from Ella to the airport takes about six hours, so day 5 is spent mostly in the car.

A middle option is our 6-day Heritage & Cultural Discovery tour (from US$649 per person, land only), which adds tea country and Ella to the Sigiriya and Kandy core.

Important for 2027

The hill-country train in a one-week trip: what is running

The section that runs is the one worth riding. Every route above drives from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (2.5 to 3 hours) and boards at Nanu Oya on the 09:00 Podi Menike, due in Ella at 11:27. The ride takes about 2.5 hours past Pattipola, the highest station on the line, and the Idalgashinna ridge. Your driver carries the luggage by road and meets you at Ella station, so you travel with a day bag only.

There is also a 14:30 departure from Nanu Oya on every day except Wednesday, and the Ella Odyssey tourist train on Wednesdays at 13:00 (operator timetable, 25 October 2026). On a one-week trip the morning train is the one to take, because it leaves the afternoon free for the Nine Arches Bridge. Reserved seats go on sale 30 days ahead on the Sri Lanka Railways portal. Our Kandy to Ella train guide covers fares, seats and which side to sit on.

Monsoon logic

Travelling May to September? The east-coast week

From May to September, spend your week on the east coast rather than the south. The south-west monsoon brings rough seas and rain to Galle and Mirissa in those months, while Trincomalee is calm and dry. This version keeps the Cultural Triangle and replaces the hill country with three nights by the sea:

7Ella to the airportTrincomalee to the airport4.5–5.5 h
Drive times from Sigiriya to Trincomalee and from Trincomalee to the airport were checked against route planners and transfer operators on 4 Nov 2026 and rounded up for a private car with a stop.

Two things make this version better than it looks on paper. The Minneriya and Kaudulla parks near Sigiriya host "the Gathering" from about July to September, when hundreds of elephants come to the shrinking reservoirs. And Pigeon Island, a short boat ride from Nilaveli, offers some of the island's easiest snorkelling over coral in calm water.

The cost is the last day: Trincomalee to the airport takes 4.5 to 5.5 hours, so plan an evening flight. Yala's main blocks also usually close for a few weeks around September (in 2026, from 14 September to 15 October), which is one more reason to skip the south that month. Our month-by-month 2027 guide shows which coast your dates favour.

A private one-week trip for two people costs about US$855–US$1,385 per person with mid-range hotels, before international flights. These figures come from the same model as our private tour cost guide: two people sharing, shoulder season, one safari and the train.

Prefer to plan the stops yourself? Hire a private car and driver instead: US$75 a day for a sedan, US$105 for a van or US$155 for a Prado, all including fuel, tolls and the driver's lodging. Over seven days a sedan comes to US$525 for the car, shared between however many of you there are. A tip of US$10 to 15 a day for the driver is customary but not required.

Lessons from the road

Five mistakes that spoil a one-week trip

The easiest mistake on a short trip is planning by distance on a map rather than by hours on the road. Here are five to avoid:

  1. Changing hotel every night. Six one-night stops means packing every morning. Two nights somewhere, even once, changes how the week feels.
  2. Driving the hill roads after dark. The UK Foreign Office notes frequent road accidents, particularly at night. Plan to arrive by about 17:00.
  3. Booking the train before the hotels. Reserved seats on the Nanu Oya–Ella section sell out, but book the route first and fit the train around it. Your driver can take you by road if the train is full.
  4. Leaving the ETA to the airport. Sri Lanka's ETA is free for UK and many EU passports since 25 May 2026, but you still need it before you fly. Our ETA guide shows the official site and the copycats to avoid.
  5. Ignoring your flight times. Most flights from Europe land between 01:00 and 08:00. A morning landing can go straight to Sigiriya or Kandy; a night landing needs Negombo first.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Seven days is enough for one region done properly: either the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and tea country, or tea country, a Yala safari and the south coast. It is not enough to do all of them without spending most of the week in the car. If you can stretch to 10 days, you can join the two halves into one loop.

What is the best 7-day itinerary for Sri Lanka?

For a first visit between December and April: Negombo (1 night), Sigiriya (1), Kandy (1), Nuwara Eliya (1) and Ella (2), with the train from Nanu Oya to Ella and a drive back to the airport on day 7. If you would rather finish on a beach, take the Safari & South Coast route instead: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala and Mirissa, with Galle Fort on the way out.

Can I see Sigiriya, Ella and the beach in one week?

Only by dropping the rest days and driving about four hours most days. The island is small, but hill roads average 40 to 50 km an hour. In a week it is better to choose two of the three: Sigiriya and Ella (Culture & Tea route), or Ella and the beach (Safari & South Coast route).

What is the best 5-day itinerary for Sri Lanka?

Sigiriya for two nights and Kandy for two nights, starting with a morning landing. It covers Sigiriya Rock, the Dambulla cave temple, Polonnaruwa or an elephant safari, and the Temple of the Tooth, with drives of three to four hours at most. Tea country, Ella and the coast need a longer trip.

Can I take the train from Kandy to Ella on a 7-day trip?

Not at the moment. As of late October 2026 no train reaches Kandy after a landslide at Kadigamuwa, and only the Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla section runs. Drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and board at Nanu Oya, which covers the most scenic stretch. Check the line status before you travel, as the full route may reopen.

How much does a 7-day Sri Lanka tour package cost?

Zelenso's 7-day private tour with car, chauffeur-guide and hotels starts at US$749 (£600 / €700) per person, land only, two sharing. Building the same week yourself with a private driver and mid-range hotels comes to about US$855–US$1,385 per person before flights, using our cost guide's model.

Which 7-day route works from May to September?

The east-coast week: Negombo, two nights around Sigiriya with the Minneriya elephants, then three nights at Trincomalee, which is calm and sunny when the south-west monsoon hits Galle and Mirissa. The Culture & Tea route also works inland year-round, though tea country is wetter in those months.

Should I hire a driver for one week in Sri Lanka?

On a one-week trip it saves the most time of any choice you make. Trains and buses are cheap but slow and do not reach the safari parks. Zelenso's private car and driver costs US$75 a day for a sedan, including fuel, tolls and the driver's lodging, and your driver can carry luggage while you take the train.
