Quick answer
Is the Kandy to Ella train running in 2027?
Not the full journey, as of November 2026. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in November 2025. Is the Kandy to Ella train running?
The good news is that the open section is the one most people come for. From Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, the line climbs past Pattipola, the highest station on the network, runs along the Idalgashinna ridge and drops through tea estates into Ella. You lose the Kandy to Nanu Oya stretch, which is pretty but not the highlight.
What happened to the line since November 2025
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 27 Nov 2025 | Cyclone Ditwah: the upcountry line is suspended. The Colombo–Badulla line is damaged at around 223 locations. |
| 20 Dec 2025 | Badulla to Ambewela reopens with a special Udarata Menike service. |
| 7 Jan 2026 | The Ella Odyssey special train resumes on the reopened section. |
| Mar–May 2026 | Repairs to the Peradeniya bridge near Kandy fall behind schedule. |
| 20 Jun 2026 | Nanu Oya to Badulla reopens after the Parakumpura landslide section is rebuilt. Podi Menike runs from Nanu Oya at 09:00. |
| Early Oct 2026 | Services between Colombo and Peradeniya are reported to resume. |
| 21–26 Oct 2026 | A landslide at Kadigamuwa closes Rambukkana to Peradeniya and Gampola; the suspension is extended indefinitely. |
| Nov 2026 | No train reaches Kandy. Only Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla is running. |
Current timetable: Nanu Oya to Ella
Sri Lanka Railways is running a special timetable on the reopened section. These times were published in late October 2026; check the booking portal before you travel, because special timetables change.
| Train | Runs | Nanu Oya | Ella | Badulla |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1005 | Daily | 09:00 | 11:27 | 12:16 |
| 1043 Ella Odyssey | Wednesdays | 13:00 | 15:21 | — |
| 1015 | Daily except Wednesday | 14:30 | 16:57 | 17:46 |
The 09:00 departure is the one we recommend. It gets you to Ella before midday, with time for Little Adam's Peak or the Nine Arches Bridge in the afternoon, and the morning light over the tea estates is usually clearer.
How to do the journey in 2027
While the Kandy section is closed, the smoothest plan combines a private car with the open stretch of railway:
- Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by road (about 2.5–3 hours), stopping at Ramboda Falls and a tea factory. Stay a night in the hill country.
- Nanu Oya to Ella by train on the 09:00 departure, about 2.5 hours. Nanu Oya station is a short drive from Nuwara Eliya.
- Your driver takes the luggage by road to Ella (about 2–2.5 hours) and meets you at the station.
That is exactly how we route our 10-day itinerary, and it means a cancelled or delayed train costs you nothing: the car simply drives you on.
Tickets, classes and prices
Fares on Sri Lanka's railways are low, but published figures disagree and change, so treat the ranges below as a guide and confirm the price when you book.
| Class | What you get | Typical fare | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| First class (observation or AC) | Reserved seat; observation car at the rear on some trains; AC on others | A few thousand rupees | Comfort and a guaranteed seat |
| Second class reserved | Reserved seat, fans, opening windows and doors | Around LKR 1,500–2,000 reported | The best balance: views and air |
| Third class reserved | Reserved basic seat | Around LKR 1,000–1,500 reported | Budget with a seat |
| Unreserved (2nd/3rd) | Ticket from the station, no seat guaranteed | A few hundred rupees | Flexible travellers; crowded in season |
| Ella Odyssey (special) | Tourist train with reserved seating | LKR 3,000–5,000 Colombo–Badulla (published) | When it runs on your day |

Reserved seats go on sale 30 days before travel. Set a reminder: popular trains in peak season sell out within minutes of opening.Open the official portal
Go to seatreservation.railway.gov.lk, the Sri Lanka Railways reservation site. Do not use look-alike resale sites.Choose the train and class
Search Nanu Oya to Ella (or Badulla). Pick first class, second class reserved or third class reserved where offered.Enter passenger details
Foreign passengers need a passport number for each traveller. Ticket names and passport numbers can be checked on board.Pay and keep the e-ticket
Pay by card and keep the confirmation. Booking closes 2 hours before departure, and tickets can only be cancelled if Sri Lanka Railways cancels the train.
Sold out? Unreserved tickets are sold at the station on the day, and the train is still worth riding if you do not mind standing for part of the way. Or ask us: we plan around the train dates when we build your route.
Best side and best sections
The rule of thumb: sit on the right from Kandy to Nanu Oya, and on the left from Nanu Oya to Ella. The line twists constantly, so the view swaps sides often; second class, with opening windows and doors, makes it easy to move.
| Section | Why it is special |
|---|---|
| Nanu Oya to Pattipola | Tea estates and cloud forest; Pattipola is the highest station on the network |
| Ohiya area | High plateau scenery near Horton Plains |
| Idalgashinna to Haputale | The line runs along a ridge with long views to the south |
| Approach to Ella | Tea terraces and the Ella Gap |
| Ella to Demodara | The Nine Arches Bridge and the Demodara loop, where the line crosses under itself |
Seeing the Nine Arches Bridge
The Nine Arches Bridge sits between Ella and Demodara, so a ticket that ends at Ella does not cross it. Most people walk to the bridge from Ella (about 30–45 minutes, or a short tuk-tuk ride) and wait for a train.
Crossing times follow the special timetable. Trains heading to Badulla cross a little after they leave Ella, and return trains cross shortly before they reach Ella. We have not found a reliable published list of 2026 crossing times, so ask locally or allow an hour of waiting. See our Nine Arches Bridge experience and train journey experience.
Train or private car?
| Train (Nanu Oya to Ella) | Private car | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | About 2.5 hours | About 2–2.5 hours from Nuwara Eliya |
| Scenery | Exceptional: ridges, tea estates, tunnels | Very good, with stops where you choose |
| Cost | Low | From US$75 a day for the whole car |
| Luggage | Awkward on a busy train | In the boot |
| Reliability | Delays and suspensions happen | Flexible; the backup if the train is cancelled |
You do not have to choose. With a driver, you ride the train and the car follows. For more on what a driver should cost, see our car and driver rate guide.
What changes when the full line reopens
When Sri Lanka Railways restores the line through Kandy, the classic journey returns: Kandy to Ella in about 6.5 to 7 hours, through Peradeniya, Gampola, Hatton and Nanu Oya. Expect demand for reserved seats to be very high in the first months, so book on the day sales open, 30 days ahead.
Until then, plan on the Nanu Oya route. Itineraries we build in 2027 include it by default and switch back to the full journey only once services are confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kandy to Ella train running in 2027?
Not end to end at the time of writing (November 2026). Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in November 2025. The Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla section reopened on 20 June 2026, but a landslide in October 2026 closed the line between Rambukkana and Peradeniya, so no train reaches Kandy. No official date has been given for the full Kandy to Ella service to return.
Can I still ride the scenic train to Ella?
Yes. The Nanu Oya to Ella section, near Nuwara Eliya, is running, and it includes much of the famous scenery: tea estates around Pattipola, the Idalgashinna ridge and the approach to Ella. Most travellers drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya and board there.
How long is the train from Nanu Oya to Ella?
About 2.5 hours. The daily morning train leaves Nanu Oya at 09:00 and reaches Ella at about 11:27 on the current special timetable. When the full line from Kandy is open, the whole journey takes about 6.5 to 7 hours.
How do I book the Ella train?
Book reserved seats on the official Sri Lanka Railways portal, seatreservation.railway.gov.lk. Sales open 30 days before travel and close 2 hours before departure. You need each passenger's passport number. Unreserved third-class tickets are sold at the station on the day.
Which side of the train is best for Ella?
Sit on the right-hand side from Kandy to Nanu Oya, then on the left-hand side from Nanu Oya to Ella. The views switch sides often, so standing at the open doors or windows for short stretches is common.
How much does the Kandy to Ella train cost?
Very little. Published fares vary by source and class, from a few hundred rupees in third class to a few thousand for reserved first-class or special trains such as the Ella Odyssey. Check the current fare on the official booking portal when you book.
Is it worth taking the train instead of a car?
For the Nanu Oya to Ella section, yes: it is one of the great rail journeys in Asia and only about 2.5 hours. Do it with a private driver who takes your luggage by road and meets you at Ella, so you get the scenery without carrying bags or worrying about connections.
What happens if my train is cancelled?
Reserved tickets are refunded when Sri Lanka Railways cancels a service, as it did during the October 2026 suspension. With a private driver, the backup is simple: the car takes you on to Ella by road in about 2 to 2.5 hours.
