Quick answer
What is a tailor-made Sri Lanka tour, and is it worth it?
A tailor-made Sri Lanka tour is a private trip built around your dates, pace, interests and hotel budget, not a fixed departure. For two sharing, plan about US$118 to US$194 per person per day all-in with mid-range hotels, excluding flights. It is worth it if control matters more to you than the lowest price.
- Four booking models compared on control, cost and risk
- Ten questions for any agency, with our answers in public
- Land-only: no flights, so no ATOL cover through Zelenso
- A brief builder with an indicative cost and a ready message
- Draft and quote
- Within 24 hours
- Hotel bases
- 2–3 nights each
- Mid-range, 10 days
- US$1,180–US$1,935 pp

What does tailor-made actually mean?
A tailor-made tour is a trip designed for one party, where the route, hotels, pace and activities are decided around you before you pay. “Customised” (or “customized”), “bespoke” and “custom itinerary” all describe the same thing, so judge a company on what it lets you change rather than on the word it uses.
A useful test has three parts:
- You can change the route, not just swap a hotel on a route already set.
- You see what each change does to the price, because the quote is itemised.
- Nobody else shares your vehicle, so the day can move when you want it to.
This guide explains the category and how to choose. If you already know tailor-made is right for you, our tailor-made Sri Lanka holidays page shows sample routes and how to start.
Tailor-made vs package, group tour and driver-only
There are four main ways to book Sri Lanka, and each trades control against cost and effort. No model suits everyone. We sell three of the four ourselves (ready-made private tours, a private car and driver, and tailor-made trips), so we have no reason to push you towards one.
| Model | Your control | Cost | Main risk of the model | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed package | Low. The route and hotels are set, and you choose the date and perhaps a room upgrade. | Clear headline price. Our 10-day ready-made private tour is from US$1,190 pp, land only. Some UK packages include flights. | The route may not fit your pace, and the headline price may leave out meals, tickets and safaris. | People who want a decision made for them |
| Group tour | Lowest. Set dates, set route, shared vehicle and shared timings. | Set by each operator. We do not sell these, so we publish no figure. Sharing can help solo travellers most. | The day moves at the group's speed, so you cannot stay longer anywhere or skip something. | Solo travellers who want company |
| Driver-only | High on the road, and you do all the planning. | US$75 sedan, US$105 van, US$155 4x4 per day. See our car and driver rates. Hotels and everything else are extra. | A driver-only booking leaves hotel problems with you, along with route planning and every reservation. | Confident planners who enjoy choosing hotels |
| Tailor-made | Highest with the least admin. You decide, and the planner books. | About US$1,180–US$1,935 pp for 10 mid-range days, all-in, excluding flights. | More decisions to make early, and it is rarely the lowest price. Flights stay separate if the planner is land-only. | Couples, families and friends with clear priorities |
What can you change on a tailor-made trip, and what can't you?
You can change almost everything about how you travel, but nothing about the weather, third-party rules or availability. A trustworthy planner should say so before you book, so here is the split.
You decide
- Trip length, the order of the route and which regions you see
- The hotel tier, and swapping any hotel for one you prefer
- How long you stay: we build on 2–3 night bases
- Start times, rest days and which sights you skip
- The vehicle: sedan, van or 4x4
- Child seats, free on request
Nobody can promise
- Wildlife sightings, which depend on the animals
- Park access: Yala Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026
- A given hotel in peak season, if it is already full
- Reserved train seats, which go on sale 30 days before travel
- Exact drive times, since traffic, weather and landslides intervene
- Fees set by third parties, which can change without notice
Three current conditions shape any 2027 plan. No train reached Kandy at the time of writing, because a landslide in October 2026 closed the line, although the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella section was running; our train guide has the detail. The FCDO also lists weekly fuel quotas and flood and landslide risk during the inter-monsoon season, which our Sri Lanka safety guide explains. And the monsoon decides your coast: May to September points you east instead of south-west.
One thing we will not add at any price is captive-elephant riding. Wild herds seen from a jeep can go in your itinerary instead.
How a custom Sri Lanka itinerary is built
A Zelenso trip goes from brief to confirmed plan in six steps, and you pay nothing until step four. The contract starts when we issue your written Confirmation, not when you send money.
You send a brief
Dates, travellers, pace, interests and hotel tier. The builder further down writes it for you.We send a draft within 24 hours
A day-by-day route and an itemised quote, with hotel options in your chosen tier.We revise until it is right
Swap hotels, reorder the route or slow the pace. Changes at this stage are free, and a quotation stays valid for 14 days unless we say otherwise. You confirm and pay the deposit
The deposit, balance date and cancellation charges are in your quotation before you pay. Read them first. You pay the balance
By the date in your quotation. Final travel documents follow once it has cleared. We run the trip with you
We monitor your flight, your chauffeur-guide meets you, and the day can change as you go. WhatsApp support runs 24/7 while you are in the country.
You do not have to start from a blank page. Any of our ready-made private tours can be a starting point, as can the routes in our 7-day itinerary and 14-day itinerary guides.
What does a tailor-made Sri Lanka tour cost in 2027?
For two people sharing, a tailor-made trip costs about US$118 to US$194 per person per day with mid-range hotels, all-in and excluding flights. Hotels drive most of the range, so the tier you choose matters more than almost anything else. The table comes from the same model as our 2027 cost guide, which breaks down each line.
| Hotel tier | 7 days | 10 days | 14 days | Per person per day (10 days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget (3★ and guesthouses) | US$635–US$950 | US$855–US$1,290 | US$1,230–US$1,865 | US$86–US$129 |
| Mid-range (4★) | US$855–US$1,385 | US$1,180–US$1,935 | US$1,695–US$2,790 | US$118–US$194 |
| Boutique | US$1,290–US$2,310 | US$1,825–US$3,310 | US$2,620–US$4,765 | US$183–US$331 |
| Luxury (5★ and lodges) | US$2,365–US$4,980 | US$3,425–US$7,285 | US$4,920–US$10,480 | US$343–US$729 |
Is tailor-made dearer than a ready-made tour?
Not necessarily, because headline prices cover different things. Our 10-day ready-made tour starts at US$1,190 per person, land only, two sharing. That includes nine nights in hotels, daily breakfast, the private vehicle and chauffeur-guide, and tolls. It excludes entry fees, the safari jeep and park entry, train tickets, most lunches and dinners, and tips.
Adding those excluded items from the cost model comes to about US$400–US$660 per person, which takes the real total to about US$1,590–US$1,850. That sits inside the US$1,180–US$1,935 range for a tailor-made trip with mid-range hotels. Compare totals, not headlines.
Build your trip brief
The builder turns your choices into an indicative cost and a written brief. Choose a length, pace, interests, hotel tier, group size and season, then send the brief to us on WhatsApp or use the enquiry form. Sending it commits you to nothing.
Indicative cost, not a quote
US$1,180 – US$1,935 per person
US$2,360 – US$3,870 for the group · about US$118–US$194 per person per day · about 4 bases

- Hotels, 9 nights (mid-range (4★))US$405–US$900
- Meals and drinksUS$200–US$350
- Culture-site ticketsUS$80–US$95
- 1 safari (park fee + jeep share)US$50–US$85
- Hill-country train, reserved seatUS$0–US$15
- Tips (driver and hotels)US$70–US$115
Indicative range, per person, in US dollars, from the model in our 2027 cost guide. It covers costs on the ground, including items a quote may list separately. It excludes international flights, visas and travel insurance. A wildlife interest adds one half-day safari.
The cost comes from the cost guide's model: a safari interest adds a safari line, the train and whale watching add theirs, and other interests shape the route without adding a line. The pace sets the number of bases, not the price. The figures are ranges to plan with. Only the itemised quote is a price.
When is tailor-made the wrong choice?
Tailor-made is the wrong choice if your priority is the lowest cost, company on the road, or one protected booking that includes flights. Here is what to do instead in each case.
- You want the lowest possible price. Trains, buses and guesthouses cost far less than a private car and driver.
- You want flights and land in one protected package. A UK operator holding an ATOL offers that, and we do not.
- You are travelling alone and want company. A group tour gives you other people and shares the transport cost.
- You love planning and already have your hotels. Book a private car and driver from US$75 a day and keep the savings.
- You do not want to make decisions. Take a ready-made route as it stands. It saves you the effort.
- You want to drive yourself. Our trips are built around a chauffeur-guide.
How to choose a tailor-made tour company: 10 questions to ask any Sri Lanka agency
To choose a tailor-made tour company, ask each one the same ten questions and compare the written answers. Clear answers with a document behind them are worth more than a slogan, ours included. Here is the test, and here is how Zelenso answers it.
| No. | Ask this | Why it matters | Zelenso's answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Who are you legally, and which licences do you hold? | A brand name does not tell you who holds your money. A company number and a licence number can both be checked. | ZELENSO (PVT) LTD, registered in Sri Lanka as PV 00359958. Our registered office in Kurunegala is for legal notices, not a walk-in office. Our CEO is George M Kuraweeka. We do not claim SLTDA licensing.Check: Booking Terms, section 1 |
| 2 | Is the whole trip private? | "Private tour" can mean a private car with shared excursions, or a shared vehicle with a private guide. | Yes. Every trip uses 100% private vehicles and chauffeur-guides. Nobody else joins your vehicle.Check: Private tours |
| 3 | What exactly is in the price, and what is not? | Two quotes can differ simply because one leaves out meals, entry fees or safaris. | Your quote is itemised. Our ready-made tours include hotels, daily breakfast, the private vehicle and chauffeur-guide, and tolls. They exclude entry fees, safari jeeps, train tickets, most lunches and dinners, and tips. A tailor-made quotation lists what is in and out of your own trip.Check: 2027 cost guide |
| 4 | How fast will I see a plan, and how many changes can I make? | The draft stage is where a trip becomes yours, so it should not be rationed. | An itemised quote and day-by-day draft within 24 hours. We revise it until it is right, and changes at this stage are free. Quotations stay valid for 14 days unless we say otherwise in writing.Check: Booking Terms, section 4 |
| 5 | What can change once I am travelling, and who pays? | Flexibility has a cost once hotels and permits are booked, and you should know that before you need it. | Timings and stops can change from day to day, because the vehicle is yours. A change that affects a supplier, such as a hotel, can be refused or charged by that supplier, and we pass any charge on at cost. Significant re-planning can carry an administration fee, which we tell you before you commit.Check: Booking Terms, section 7 |
| 6 | Will I be taken to shops or animal attractions? | A stop you did not choose costs you sightseeing time, and captive animal activities raise welfare questions. | Zero forced shopping and no commission stops. If you ask to visit a shop, that is your choice. We do not book captive-elephant riding.Check: Why choose Zelenso |
| 7 | How much do I pay, when, and what happens if I cancel? | The moment you pay a deposit is the moment the terms bind you. | A deposit, then the balance. The amounts, the due date and the cancellation charges are written in your quotation before you pay anything, and they do not change afterwards. We do not publish one fixed cancellation scale, because supplier terms differ from trip to trip.Check: Cancellation Policy |
| 8 | What protects my money if your company fails? | This is the question a price comparison never answers. Ask for the name of the scheme, not a general reassurance. | We sell no flights, so there is no ATOL cover through us. Section 16 of our Booking Terms says that if insolvency protection is required under the law where you live, we confirm in writing what applies to your booking before you pay. Ask for that confirmation before you pay a deposit.Check: Booking Terms, section 16 |
| 9 | Who answers when something goes wrong, and what if my flight is late? | A problem at 2 a.m. in the hills is a test of support, not of the brochure. | WhatsApp on +94 70 552 2299, monitored 24/7 while you are in the country. We are a small team and cannot promise an immediate reply overnight, so in an emergency call the emergency services first. We monitor your flight, and there is no surcharge for a delay.Check: Booking Terms, section 14 |
| 10 | How many real reviews can I read? | A count, names, countries and dates tell you far more than a star rating alone. | 6 reviews are published on our site, rated 5.0 out of 5, each with a name, country and date. That is a small number, because we are a young company.Check: Reviews |
Warning signs in a tailor-made quote
A warning sign is a gap in a document, not a verdict on a company, and most gaps close with one polite question. Hold our quote to the same list.
- One total with no breakdown. You cannot see what a change would save or what has been left out.
- No legal company name or registration number. You should know who you are paying.
- A deposit requested before the cancellation terms are in writing.
- Protection described in general terms. Ask for the scheme, the provider and the reference.
- A new hotel every night on a long trip. Two or three nights in a base leaves time to see it.
- A shop, gem or spice stop you did not ask for. Ask for it to be removed.
- A daily vehicle rate far below the market. Our rate benchmarks show what a normal all-inclusive rate covers.
What Zelenso does not offer
We are a young, land-only Sri Lankan company, and that has real limits you should weigh before paying us. We would rather you read them here than discover them later.
- No flights, so no ATOL. ATOL, run by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, protects flight-inclusive packages booked with an ATOL holder. We sell no flights, so you book them separately and they carry no ATOL cover through us. If you want a package with flights protected, UK operators with that cover offer it, and you should weigh this.
- Land-only does not settle the protection question. A trip combining hotels and transport at one price can count as a package, and UK rules require organisers selling packages in the UK to provide insolvency protection, by bond, insurance or a trust account. We do not advertise such a scheme on this site. Section 16 of our Booking Terms commits us to confirm in writing what applies to your booking before you pay. Ask for that confirmation, and do not pay until you are satisfied. UK package rules also change on 6 April 2027.
- No SLTDA licensing claim. We do not claim Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority licensing. Our DMC checklist explains how to check registration with SLTDA directly.
- No sustainability certification. We hold none. Our no-captive-elephant-riding rule is our own policy, not an audited standard.
- A short public record. We are a young company with 6 published reviews. That is too few to prove anything on its own.
- No walk-in office. Our Kurunegala address is for legal notices. We work by email, phone and WhatsApp.
- A small team. WhatsApp is monitored 24/7, but we cannot promise an immediate reply overnight.

What guests have written
We publish 6 reviews, rated 5.0 out of 5. That is a small sample, so read it as a sample. All 6 name one of our tours, so they speak to how trips are run rather than to planning from a blank page. Here are three, in full.
“Our 10-day private tour with Zelenso was perfection from start to finish. Our chauffeur-guide was extraordinary, immensely knowledgeable about Sri Lankan history, a calm and safe driver, and incredible with our two children. We never felt rushed and avoided all tourist traps.”
The Henderson Family, United Kingdom, February 2026
“Traveling as solo female friends, safety and comfort were our top priorities. Zelenso’s chauffeur was polite, respectful, and treated us with unmatched Sri Lankan hospitality. The pricing was completely transparent with zero hidden costs.”
Elena Rostova & Friends, Switzerland, December 2025
“As avid wildlife photographers, we wanted an unhurried safari experience in Yala and Wilpattu. Zelenso paired us with an exceptional naturalist tracker and a private vehicle. We spotted three leopards, sloth bears, and countless elephants. Absolutely first class!”

Frequently asked questions
What is a tailor-made Sri Lanka tour?
A tailor-made tour is a private trip planned around your own dates, route, pace, interests and hotel budget, instead of a fixed departure. You see a day-by-day draft and an itemised price, change it until it fits, and then travel with your own vehicle and chauffeur-guide. Customised, customized and bespoke all describe the same idea.
How much does a tailor-made tour of Sri Lanka cost?
For two people sharing, our cost model gives about US$118 to US$194 per person per day with mid-range hotels, or US$1,180–US$1,935 per person for 10 days. That covers the car and driver, hotels, meals, tickets, one safari, the train and tips, but not flights. It is an indicative range, not a quote.
Is tailor-made more expensive than a package?
Not always, because the two prices often cover different things. Our 10-day ready-made tour starts at US$1,190 per person, land only, and excludes entry fees, safari jeeps, train tickets, most meals and tips. Adding those from our cost model brings it to about US$1,590–US$1,850, inside the US$1,180–US$1,935 range for a mid-range tailor-made trip. Compare totals, not headline prices.
What is the difference between tailor-made and hiring a private driver?
With a private driver you pay a daily vehicle rate, from US$75 for a sedan, and you plan the trip and book the hotels yourself. With a tailor-made tour we plan the route, book the hotels and arrange the trip for you, and you have one company to contact if a booking goes wrong.
How many days do you need for a tailor-made Sri Lanka tour?
Seven days covers one region pairing, such as the Cultural Triangle and tea country. Ten days adds a safari or the coast without rushing, and 14 days lets you do all of these with rest days. Staying two or three nights in each base means a 10-day trip has about four hotels.
What is the best tailor-made tour company in Sri Lanka?
We are not aware of an independent ranking, so we will not claim that title. The right company for you is the one that answers the ten questions in this guide clearly and in writing, including who holds your money and what is excluded from the price. We publish our own answers so you can compare them.
Is a tailor-made trip with Zelenso ATOL protected?
No. We sell land arrangements and no flights, so there is no ATOL cover through us. ATOL protects flight-inclusive packages booked with an ATOL holder. If you want flights and ground arrangements protected in one package, weigh that before booking with us. For other insolvency protection, ask us to confirm the position for your booking in writing before you pay.
Can we change the plan during the trip?
Yes, within limits. Because the vehicle and chauffeur-guide are yours, timings and stops can change from day to day. Changing a booked hotel or activity depends on that supplier, who can refuse or charge for it, and any supplier charge is passed on at cost.
Can I start from one of your ready-made tours?
Yes. Any ready-made tour can be the starting point for a tailor-made trip. Tell us which one, and what you would change, such as the hotels, the number of nights in a base or an added safari, and we will send a revised draft and quote.
